Birdwatching or birding is the observation and study of birds with the naked eye or through a visual enhancement device like binoculars. Birding often involves a significant auditory component, as many bird species are more readily detected and identified by ear than by eye. Most birdwatchers pursue this activity mainly for recreational or social reasons, unlike ornithologists, who engage in the study of birds using more formal scientific methods.

How do I keep large black birds away from my bird feeders?
Q. I have bird feeders in my yard to feed the tiny little birds that fly about, especially this time of year when it's really cold. The problem I am having is that there are alot of crow / black birds in our area and they are absolutely relentless when it comes to the bird feeders. I really don't care for these black birds at all. They eat or destroy all the food for the little birds in a short amount of time. Does any one have a sensible solution to this bird problem, besides shooting the black birds. We have plenty of woods and fields for these black birds to hang out in...Not my bird feeders!

A. First of all why are you feeding birds anyway? Let alone the black ones...wait, is this about humans or animals. It's hard to tell the difference most of the time.

How long does it take bird eggs to hatch?
Q. Birds built a nest and laid eggs in my grill. I left them alone, but I think the birds abandoned the nest. I want to cook on my grill, but I want to give the little guys a chance too. How long does it usually take bird eggs to hatch. Don't know what kind of bird this is, but they're tiny eggs.

A. It varies by species..but most passerines (perching birds) take approximately 2 weeks to hatch their eggs, and usually another 2 weeks before the young leave the nest. If the nest is active and the parents are still attending to it, it would actually be illegal for you to remove it as all native birds are protected by law. I am glad you decided to give them a chance! You can watch it from afar to see if the parent or parents are going to it, to see if it has for SURE been abandoned. If they see you nearby..they will not come. You have to watch for a while though as they may stay off the nest for 20-30 minutes at a time. Once you are able to remove the nest...you will need to block off the entrance the bird used to get in there so that… [cont.]

Why are 2 different kinds of birds sitting on the nest on my back porch?
Q. These birds built a nest on the porchlight. I always see a robin sitting on it. Well the other day, my mom says she saw a little bird that was blue with white under the wings sitting on it. What kind of bird might that be? And why would a bird other than the one nesting sit on that nest?
Asked by Heron By The Sea - Sat Apr 21 13:41:59 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It is true Robins will build anywhere. The other bird sounds like a Blue Jay not sure I need to see the bird. They will eat other eggs from other nest. What might have happened is the Blue Jay took over the nest. I just found a web site about birds there is a link to Identifying I hope this helps.
