Photography (pronounced /fәˈtɒɡrәfi/) is the process, activity and art of creating still or moving pictures by recording radiation on a sensitive medium, such as a photographic film, or an electronic sensor. Light patterns reflected or emitted from objects activate a sensitive chemical or electronic sensor during a timed exposure, usually through a photographic lens in a device known as a camera that also stores the resulting information chemically or electronically. Photography has many uses for business, science, art and pleasure.

Lens and mounting of a large-format camera. A historic camera: the Contax S of 1949 — the first pentaprism SLR. Nikon F of 1959 — the first 35mm film system camera. Late Production Minox B camera with later style "honeycomb" selenium light meter A portable folding reflector positioned to "bounce" sunlight onto a model

The word "photograph" was coined in 1839 by Sir John Herschel and is based on the Greek φῶς (phos) "light" and γραφή (graphê) "representation by means of lines" or "drawing", together meaning "drawing with light". Traditionally, the products of photography have been called negatives and photographs, commonly shortened to photos.

Should I start my own business in photography?
Q. I work at a portrait studio now and have been in photography for the last 8 years, part of me wants to go to school and learn enough about photography and how to run a small business. The other part is worried that photography is a dying business with so many people doing their own photography with digital cameras & photoshop. Is it worth all that school ,money & time?

How to copyright photography to sell on ebay?
Q. I absolutely love to take nature photography. I feel like my work is good enough to sell, and I would like to give it a try on ebay. I don't want anyone to steal my images from there though so I am wondering what the best way is to copyright my material. I've seen people put a word over the image so people won't want to try to take the image off the site to use as their own. Also, If someone does buy one of my pics, how do I copyright the actual photograph?

A. Recently, the government has come to the conclusion that if you have the original negative, the image is yours. Brilliant right? But you should embed a digital watermark using photoshop, or paintshop if you're going to sell them online. The poorman's copyright isn't a bad idea either. The whole thing with the legal paperwork is that it entitles you, without any court proceedings, to any royalties if someone reproduces your image for their use.
